The words of Maybach are enough to immediately recall the luxury cars of the premium class, the most modern safety and comfort systems, as well as the most modern interior design. So the other day the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with the Z223 index was presented, which, in fact, is a modified Mercedes-Benz S-Class W223. The first external difference is a different radiator grill, with a branded emblem on the top.
The side section of the new Mercedes-Maybach features branded rims that cannot be confused with other variants. Depending on the wishes of the buyer, the wheels can be 19 ″, 20 ″ or 21 ″. In the basic configuration, retractable handles are already installed, which also looks luxurious (for the Mercedes S-Class, retractable handles are available as an option). The main difference, and perhaps the most noticeable one, is the two-tone body color, which has always distinguished the Maybach from other cars. But the main highlight is hidden in the rear doors, which are now electrically operated. According to the available data, they can be operated by both passengers and the driver without leaving the car.
Compared to the regular Mercedes-Benz W223, the wheelbase of the new Maybach Z223 has grown by 180 mm and is now 3396 mm. However, the length of the luxury sedan hasn't changed much, now it's from 5453mm to 5469mm. No less attention is attracted by the modern optics Digital Light, which is offered as an option in Maybach. Their peculiarity is that they can draw all kinds of prompts on the road surface for the driver. According to the manufacturer, engineers have hidden 1.3 million micromirrors in each headlight, which, paired with three powerful LEDs, can direct it to a specified location.
The interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has undergone major changes. All configurations, without exception, will now be produced with a two-seater, separate second row of seats. Three-seater modifications of the second row were excluded from production. The buyer can now choose the functionality and configuration of the second row seats, or even order it to his taste. The backrest of the second row seats can be tilted between 19 and 43.5 degrees from the vertical position.
With luxurious improvements in terms of seats, you can note the heating of the neck, shoulders, as well as a footrest with a built-in massage function. The function of telescopic seat belts, which was previously tested on the top convertibles and coupes of the Mercedes-Benz company, fits quite well here. As for the divider between the rear seats, it is possible to build in a refrigerator, various kinds of control panels and other various elements at the request of the buyer.
The Mercedes-Maybach Z223 audio system with active noise cancellation will make a good impression. The lighting for the second row has also been revised, now it is adaptive and using the software you can change the brightness of the lighting, the direction and strength of the light beam. According to the manufacturer, a total of 253 LED elements are installed along the perimeter of the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. In addition, 5 color OLED displays are also available. This means that the image quality will be excellent.
Not without additional protection for second-row passengers. For them, a special mechanism has been developed that will protect in the most severe collisions, including head-on. For this, airbags were installed in the backs of the front seats. Due to the special tubular design of the second-row airbags, they are significantly softer at the moment of deployment, and therefore better protect the neck and head of the passenger.
Considering the complete set of safety equipment and airbags in the belts, there are 18 airbags installed around the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Z223. As in the regular S-Class, at the moment of a side collision, the system automatically raises the car, thereby softening the force of the impact on the lower part, where the metal is significantly thicker.
According to the standard, an air suspension is installed at the heart of the new Maybach, for a separate surcharge, the buyer is offered E-Active Body Control (hydropneumatic suspension), as well as a fully-controlled chassis, where the rear wheels also turn. In the future, it is planned to install an autopilot system for driving on the highway (DP - Drive Pilot) on board the luxury novelty.
The first copies of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will be offered in two modifications: S580 and S650. The S580 trim level will receive a 4.0-liter V8 petrol unit. Power 489 horses and 700 Nm of torque. The older version of the S650 will get a V12 gasoline unit with two turbochargers with a volume of 6.0 liters. The power of such an engine is 630 hp and 1000 Nm of torque.
It is still a secret what will be installed in tandem for each of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class engines. It is known that the on-board power supply system is designed for a 48-volt starter-generator (EQ Boost). In the first seconds of the start, it significantly helps the engine, developing an additional 20 horses and 180 Nm of torque. The official sales stratum in various countries is scheduled for early spring or summer 2021. Then the cost and more details about the new sedan will be announced.
