The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, or better known as UAZ, has presented many developments in its history of the automotive industry, as well as different configurations. Most often, UAZ is associated with Hunter, he is the heir to UAZ 469, "Loaf" or Patriot today.

Until recently, UAZ in the back of a pickup was also something unusual. Officially, such a version of the UAZ was presented in 2008, under the code index 23632. The third generation and the first update of the third generation have reached our time. Officially, the third generation was shown in parallel with the Patriot in 2017. Accordingly, the update of parts also fell on the beginning of 2019. I would like to note right away that the external changes are minimal, in the same way as in the pickup. Most of the improvements were made to the technical characteristics, but there are also differences from the Patriot, especially in the chassis.

The explanation for this similarity is simple - the same Patriot served as the basis for the new UAZ Pickup, and to the extent of its changes and improvements, the new Pickup also changed. Thus, it turns out that the updated PickUp received the same improvements as the new Patriot. Now let's take a closer look at the new 2019 model, configuration, specifications and price.

As already mentioned, the well-known Patriot served as the basis and design for the new UAZ Pickup. The designers, in fact, transferred everything that is to the new platform, as well as added the back. A similar situation has affected the restyled version and is likely to follow the already established traditions and improvements. If you do not look at the side of the car, but look at the new PickUp from the front, then you cannot immediately distinguish it from the Patriot SUV.

The design is completely identical, the front optics with pronounced lenses (two in each optics), as well as underlined by the LED daytime running lights. The radiator grille is almost unchanged, with the exception of the chrome surround. In the center of the grill is the corporate logo of the company.

The front bumper of the Pickup also underwent a slight revision, an open additional grille at the bottom and a pair of rectangular inserts on the sides with round foglights. It is worth noting that, depending on the configuration of the UAZ Pickup, the front bumper can change shape and additional elements, there may be chrome inserts or additional protection in the lower part.

For the rest, the UAZ Pickup will not surprise you with anything new, in some trim levels it is proposed to install a windshield with full or partial heating in the area of ​​the wipers. The hood of the novelty is outwardly no different, a pair of stampings and a raised central part, gas stops are added according to the mechanism, which greatly facilitated the moment of lifting and holding the hood.

From the side, the new UAZ Pickup completely resembles the Patriot, if you do not take into account the additional body. The designers essentially cut the Patriot up to and including the rear doors and added a body. Regardless of the selected configuration, all car models are designed for two rows of doors. The body of the UAZ PickUp is also standard and, on average, is designed for the transportation of cargo weighing up to 725 kg.

The standard pickup includes side steps for a comfortable fit, plastic wheel arch liners, as well as side rear-view mirrors with a good set. The list of mirrors includes LED turn signals, electric adjustment, automatic folding and heating. For the rest, the UAZ Pickup will not surprise you with anything, the usual body lines and the same severity of the body lines.

By body color, the new UAZ Pickup is available in 7 shades:

All body colors of the UAZ PickUp, with the exception of white, are available in a metallic shade, for which you will need to pay an additional 12,900 rubles. The basis for the updated model was 16 ″ alloy wheels with 235/70 tires (steel wheels are excluded from the list of the updated model). As an option, they offer to install 16 ″ alloy wheels of a different design with tires 245/70 (additional payment of 8900 rubles).

The rear of the refreshed pickup truck doesn't really stand out, if you don't take into account the deep body for transporting cargo. The relative cargo area has pros and cons. Among the positive aspects is that the sides of the body are quite high, which means that the cargo will be targets during transportation.

Also, the loading platform itself received good dimensions: 1375 mm by 1265 mm (wheel arches are taken into account). Among the minuses are large wheel arches, which eat up space in the cargo compartment. Excluding the protruding wheel arches, the width of the loading platform is 1500 mm and the height of the sides is 650 mm. The rear side of the UAZ engineers also finalized, although there is no mention of this. It has become heavier, and the attachment loops themselves are better, which easily allows you to sit or put lightly heavy weights.

In addition to the fact that an oversized cargo can be placed in the body of the UAZ Pickup for transportation, the manufacturer proposes to re-equip it for a roomy trunk. To do this, as an option, for an additional fee, they propose to install a hard unglazed KUNG (additional payment of 68,500 rubles), a soft awning (additional payment of 13,500 r), protective arches (10,900 r), or just a hard cover of the compartment, paying 43,900 rubles.

The roof of the updated UAZ Pickup does not differ in special details. Basic trim levels will receive a solid roof with stiffeners at the rear. For a separate surcharge, you can add roof rails for attaching an additional trunk or an electric sunroof.

For better inspection from the UAZ PickUp cab, an additional rear window has been added. As new and experienced car owners have already noted, there are not enough functions for opening the rear window or at least a small window, like those of competitors. Otherwise, there are no special innovations, the rear bumper of the pickup is compact, and if necessary, it can be completely replaced with a metal pipe. As they say, it is more reliable and easier to operate.

The interior of the updated UAZ Pickup

If outwardly the pickup differs from the Patriot, then inside they are identical. The update fell on both models, respectively, and the details, functions are the same. The front panel has received the pronounced shape of an SUV. The central part is occupied by a 7 ″ display of the multimedia system based on Android Auto. Many options were transferred by engineers to a touchscreen display, in the top versions a rear-view camera with markings was added. For comfort, a good audio system with 4 or 6 speakers can be noted, while the possibility of installing a couple more speakers around the perimeter of the cabin is not excluded.

In addition to the multimedia display, the center console of the Pickup received a panel of buttons for security systems, as well as a climate control panel. The console ends with a small recess for storing various little things, as well as a 12V charger and a cigarette lighter socket. The central tunnel of the updated UAZ Pickup will also surprise with innovations, the transmission lever has not changed outwardly, but the moment of gear shifting has become clear and there is no need to look for a slot for a transmission. On the central tunnel, there are also buttons for heating the front seats, a pair of cup holders and a small depression for various little things.

The central tunnel of the Pickup ends with a massive armrest with a spacious compartment inside.All the same, the drawbacks remained, the armrest lining is made of rough leather, likewise the plastic remained tough. On the reverse side, an ashtray, seat heating buttons are mounted for the rear passengers, and as an option, a 12V socket can be installed.With additional comfort functions of the updated UAZ PickUp 2019, you can note a glove compartment (glove compartment) with a cooling function, a modified temperature sensor, which now shows the temperature in the cabin and outside the car, as an addition, you can install textile floor mats with a branded lettering. The minimum changes were made to the seats of the UAZ Pickup, the first row received comfortable seats with mechanical adjustment and a high back.

The second row of seats is designed for seating 3 passengers, with head restraints for each. Like the front seats, the second row can be adjusted for reach and backrest angle. Unlike the Patriot, the designers made a small recess under the second-row seats, in which you can store various little things, including a repair tool.

The downside is, of course, that at the time of a breakdown it will be necessary to unload everything and everyone in the rear seats, besides, the presence of repair keys under the seats creates additional noise in the cabin. Therefore, many immediately advise to wrap them in a soft cloth or store different things at a minimum under the rear seats. As a material for the upholstery of the UAZ Pickup, two different options are offered at the buyer's choice: high-quality fabric and leather. Both upholstery options will be black, although rumor has it that they can be gray or brown on request (brown for leather only).

The last thing to consider is the driver's seat. Those who often sat in a pre-styling pickup will immediately understand where there are differences. For example, the UAZ Pickup was updated on the steering wheel, although the previous "joint" was never fixed. The steering wheel looks modern and is designed for three spokes, two of which are reserved for function buttons and a branded chrome emblem in the center. The downside is that the on-board computer still has to be controlled using the direction indicator lever, not the function buttons.

As for the UAZ Pickup instrument panel, there are two main options: a panel for two dial gauges or a panel for 4 dial gauges and a chrome edging (a fully digital panel is still unavailable). Both options include a monochrome display of the on-board computer, as well as indicators for various pickup systems.

In total, the interior of the updated UAZ Pickup has freshened up, with a minimum noticeable number of changes. Designers have added a multimedia display, modern control systems, as well as a few moments of comfort. Otherwise, everything is strict, consistent and quite acceptable for off-road driving.

Technical characteristics of UAZ Pickup

As already mentioned, in addition to minor updates to the exterior and interior of the UAZ Pickup, most of the improvements fell on the technical characteristics of the car. First, and perhaps most importantly, the new engine. The basic configuration of the pickup will continue to be equipped with the old unit ZMZ 40906, for 134.6 horses, the rest of the complete set of the updated car received a new ZMZ 409051, with a capacity of 150 hp. In addition to the new engine, the peak torque has also decreased, which has a positive effect on off-road driving and fuel economy.

As experienced car owners already say, the installation of the ZMZ Pro engine has significantly improved the dynamic characteristics of the pickup. He became an order of magnitude more frisky at the moment of starting from a place, as well as in the case of a sharp acceleration while overtaking. Despite the fact that the engine was improved, the updated Pickup retained its cross-country ability in the most difficult situations. The driver is still available 4 main modes of blocking the all-wheel drive.

The first is the well-known 2H, which drives only the rear axle. This mode is perfect for driving on a flat road for long and short distances, saves fuel and does not load the engine. The second mode - 4H, is responsible for the rigidly connected four-wheel drive, copes well in bad weather and difficult road situations. The third pickup mode - 4L is designed for a low range of gears, as a rule, with a gear ratio of 2.542, the pickup will ideally go through difficult off-road conditions.

The last fourth 4L + mode, marked with a dot on the washer near the gear lever, tightly locks the rear axle differential, thereby maximizing the quality of the SUV. In addition to choosing the appropriate mode with the selector on the washer, the manufacturer recommends turning on the lock with a button (next to the heated front seats). The moment of inclusion is characterized by the corresponding indicator on the instrument panel and a click under the floor of the pickup.

The layout of such dimensions of the UAZ Pickup and the new engine this time is perfectly combined with each other. In the pre-styling version, the main problem was a single-row chain, which at the time of strong overloads could simply burst and lead to serious damage to the unit. In the new engine, the engineers installed a double-row chain, with reinforced links and of better quality metal. Experts have already noted that such a move will have a positive effect on the dynamics of the car and its off-road characteristics.

The suspension of the updated pickup had no less modifications, but it should not be compared with the modifications that fell on the lot of the new Patriot. Recall that the new Patriot received two springs on the rear axle, in the pickup there are three of them, as there was still a need to transport cargo. The shock absorbers have been modified to improve comfort.

The main nuance that fell to the share of the updated pickup is a continuous bridge. Today, it is almost impossible to find modern cars with such technology, since many manufacturers considered it outdated and ineffective. Nevertheless, UAZ engineers implemented it on a new pickup. Thus, the suspension began to resemble the Profi truck, the same manufacturer, but the reliability and cross-country ability of the pickup only improved. Maneuverability and confidence on the road have improved, which has been repeatedly mentioned by the new owners.

As already mentioned, improvements were made to the transmission of the new UAZ Pickup. The gear lever shifts smoothly by installing a damper. The clutch has received a slight improvement, it has become a little softer, so that you do not need to apply a lot of effort when changing gears. The steering behaves quite well now due to the installation of a horizontal damper on the steering rods.

The updated UAZ pickup truck holds the road perfectly, became more obedient at the time of overtaking or a sharp movement by the wheel, but there were also disadvantages. The damper itself was located very low, due to which it can be easily ripped off the fasteners on serious off-road conditions. Another disadvantage is the CV joints rubber anthers, which are just as easy to damage. According to the manufacturer, these shortcomings have already been taken into account, and subsequent models will come out with additional steel protection.

In addition to the improvements listed, the buyer is offered to install 4 leaf springs at the rear on each side to increase the stiffness of the suspension. You can also add branded inserts under the shock absorbers, thereby increasing the ground clearance. In other words, the manufacturer UAZ Pickup showed the base, and further improvements depend on the wishes of the buyer, in which it is not limited in any way.

Safety and comfort UAZ Pickup

After the Patriot, the UAZ Pickup model is considered the most comfortable among other models produced by this manufacturer. Accordingly, the set of security and comfort systems is also not small. Despite the fact that this is a pickup, a lot has migrated from the older brother of the UAZ Patriot, among the main systems it can be noted:

The listed safety and comfort systems for UAZ PickUp are just a small list of what can be installed. As an option, the manufacturer offers to install many additional accessories, different winches, additional lighting and other elements that simplify driving.

Price and configuration of UAZ Pickup

The differences between the configurations of the UAZ Pickup are minimal, and for the most part it concerns the technical characteristics. The rest of the details are almost identical, both externally and internally, in particular, the lining, chrome parts and other decorative trifles differ.

If we talk about the differences in technical characteristics, then the basic configuration starts at 804,900 rubles, the top-end configuration will cost from 1,185,000 rubles. These prices make the pickup an affordable vehicle and a good competitor for models in its class. The main disadvantage of the basic configuration is the old-style engine, as well as flaws in the chassis. All other configurations of the UAZ Pickup received a ZMZ 409051 engine with a capacity of 150 horses, a modified suspension and a control system.

We can say that the new pickup from UAZ has received at least a minimum of noticeable changes, but in the technical part it has become much better. Comparing the pre-styling version and the updated pickup, the differences were in handling, off-road capability and power. Engineers eliminated the shortcomings of the previous UAZ pickup, thereby improving the new product. Since the differences are in technical terms, for comparison, it is best to first drive on the old version and then on the updated UAZ.
